Carl Wilhelm Wilhelmson was born in the little fishing village of Fiskebäcksil on the west coast of Sweden. He began working in a print works in Gothenburg as a lithography apprentice, and in 1890 he traveled to Paris to attend the Académie Julian.

After returning to Sweden in 1896 he was director of the Valand art school, and in 1910 he opened his own art school in Stockholm. In the 1920s he became a teacher at the Royal Academy of Arts in Stockholm.

Throughout his career he painted subjects from life, recording the scenes of life that he encountered. Primarily painting Swedish views, his landscapes from the 1910s and 20s also include views of Cornwall, Lapland and Spain.
