The son of a royal Hofbuchhalters Julius Schrag grew up in his native town. Here he was early artistic stimulated in the studios of Lorenz Ritter, who granted his first painting lessons, and Max Ebersberg. On April 18, 1882 at the age of 17½ years, he began his study at the Akademie of Fine Arts in Munich in nature class by JL Raab.
He was also a student of Wilhelm von Diez, William of Lindenschmit and H. Zügel.

A particularly strong influence came from the Dutch paintings on him. Already on the
international art exhibition in Munich in 1888 Dutch masters had fascinated him.
The work of the brothers Maris, Mauve and Albert Neuhaus aroused in him a longing for
Dutch and Friesischen landscape. But not until 1903 his greatest wish was fulfilled,
to be able to see and experience the Netherlands. He painted in Amsterdam, Volendam and Monnikendam at the Zuider Zee. In 1905, his painting of a Dutch landscape in Salzburg got the Silver Austrian State medal.

From that first meeting the painter could not let go the atmosphere of the Netherlands as well as the Flemish landscape. Again and again he looked at them and painted in Bruges, Mol and Nieuport, Heeze (near Eindhoven), Edam, Hoorn and Amsterdam. For his "Flemish interior" Schrag received on the occasion of the 10th International Art Exhibition in Munich in 1909, the Gold medal. In 1911, the painter held on for half a year in Paris, and during the First World War II he painted in Lüneburg, Lübeck, Wismar, Stralsund and Danzig.

From 1920 to Schrag discovered the beauty of the East Frisian landscape. Almost a quarter of a century he sought every year on Ostfriesland and painted in Emden, Greetsiel, Accumersiel, carolinensiel and in the fishing villages on the lower Ems, especially in Ditzum and Jemgum, often together with the East Frisian painters Jaques Roskamp and Georg Warring. Schrags studio in Munich Kaulbachstraße for many years showed a collection of Dutch and East Frisian paintings.
