An adorable story about a child's evening routine

It Is Not Time for Sleepingby Lisa Graff, illustrated by Lauren Castillo
written for ages 2-7 | highly recommended
published in 2016 | Clarion Books | 40 pages

Most children have a way to forestall bedtime. The little boy in Lisa Graff’s warm-hearted picture book strives to live in the present. At dinner, while washing dishes and throughout his nighttime routine, he continually reminds his parents that there is still a lot that must happen before he goes to sleep. He fights fatigue until he gets his good night hug from both his parents – then it is time for sleeping.
Lauren Castillo captures the comforts of home with her boldly outlined images. Her illustrations include numerous realistic details, such as potted plants on a window sill, dish rags on the counter, a canister of cooking utensils, dirty socks on the bathroom floor and running water in the bathroom. Images grow darker with each page. The glow of night lights and a full moon shining through a window contrast with the shadows of bedroom furniture. The reader can almost feel the warmth of a blanket and the heaviness of sleepy eyes as the book ends.
A former teacher, Jennifer Minicus is currently a full-time wife and mother.

I am a bit puzzled by the horrified gasps of journalists at the rise of “post-truth” politics in the era of Donald Trump. Perhaps these guys skipped their lectures at college. For the past 30 or 40 years, post-truth philosophy has been the received Gospel in the humanities. “Truth is what your contemporaries let you get away with,” said the grand old man of American relativism, the philosopher Richard Rorty, a familiar contributor to the New York Times. He was only half-joking. There was no such thing as truth – only democratic consensus.
So after a generation of toxic philosophy, why is anyone surprised that we are on the brink of a generation of toxic politics? Hasn’t the media ever heard of the notion that ideas have consequences? Andrew Calcutt does a good job of describing how intellectuals sold off the family silver in an article below
