A biography about the creators of a beloved monkey

The Journey that Saved Curious Georgeby Louise Borden, illustrated by Allan Drummond
written for ages 9-12 | highly recommended
published in 2005 | HMH Books for Young Readers | 73 pages

This outstanding illustrated biography tells the story of Margret and H.A. Rey, the husband and wife team that brought Curious George into the lives of so many children.
Although they both grew up in Hamburg, these two Germans did not get to know each other until they met in Brazil. They married and moved to Paris where they began writing their children's books.
After WWII broke out, they joined the millions of refugees fleeing the city before the arrival of the Nazis. For the Reys, the departure was particularly imperative as they were both Jews. With the Germans near at hand and no trains available, the Reys biked out of the capital with their manuscripts.
Louise Borden's recounting of their adventures is accompanied by Allan Drummond's colorful illustrations as well as photos of the Reys and various documents. Also depicted are some of Hans Rey's original drawings, including one from his childhood. Unlike many biographies, which are often dry and purely factual, The Journey that Saves Curious George combines the charm of a picture book with a suspenseful story.
A former teacher, Jennifer Minicus is now a full-time wife and mother.

The debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump was one of the most dispiriting events I have ever seen. Mrs Clinton had a bucket of foetid garbage ready for her opponent and she used it to full effect. Mr Trump retaliated, in spades, threatening to jail her if he wins the election. This is the man who said, only a few days ago, “The Clintons are the sordid past. We will be the very bright and clean future.”
What did Americans do to deserve this? They have spent around US$5 billion on this election and instead of listening to a debate about policy, they ended up watching a domestic. Zac Alstin has some very pertinent observations in our lead story.
